When they told me their wedding was going to be in Monterey my eyes lit up. I love the area and come on, it's Monterey. The ceremony and reception took place at a unique little restaraunt called <a href="http://www.tarpys.com/">Tarpy's Roadhouse</a> . Everything went so smooth and I had a blast with everyone. and simple: If you are not shooting using custom white balance via kelvin on your camera - you are missing out. I learned a few years back by <a href="http://www.mikecolon.com/">Mike Colon</a> to shoot this way and now it is second nature - I will never shoot without it. I find that after exposure, white balance is the key to a proper looking image. I know, I know, many are going to argue that they shoot RAW and they do it all in post anyways, but why not save yourself a step? I am not going to get into the argument of RAW vs JPEG, but one key reason I do shoot jpeg is because I like to preserve the white balance settings I set in my camera at the time of shooting. There are 5 reasons I believe custom setting your white balance on the fly will improve your photography:<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">1. Greatly reduces your time spent post-processing for any white balance issues.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">2. Gives better straight out of camera shots.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">3. Gives better consistency between groupings of images and their specific lighting situations.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">4. You will learn a lot more about how to capture better skin tones, etc. by correctly white balancing a scene.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">5. Why wouldn't it? When I was between the ages of 10-12 I could have sworn we had a wedding every two months or so - no kidding. Why didn't I shoot weddings then? It was like a wedding boom between those years! Sadly, once all my second cousins were married the wedding goodness all dried up.<br /><br />When my cousin Nick came to me asking if I would photograph his and Patricia's wedding I was so on it! A family wedding just like the good old times of my younger years! It was an amazing time and brought back so many memories being around family and friends. When I got the call from them to do a shoot for <a href="http://www.limbsaver.com/">LimbSaver</a> magazine in which they were being featured I was beyond stoked. Steve &amp; Jennifer are such a great couple - their vibe is energizing and we had a great time shooting. It didn't hurt that Jennifer use to be a model! I have no doubt Steve is going straight to the top with his passion and I am really looking forward to Jennifer's new line of fashionable hunting wear that she kept saying she wanted to produce! This is my second time this month staying near SC. Just 2 weeks ago I got back from Aptos at an AMAZING beach house on the water with my fiancee and her family. I have really been super blessed. Camping with friends was no exception. I was only able to stay overnight and had to leave early in the morning so Val and I were dying to just run down to the beach. We stopped on our way home and I took a couple shots by the water. My buddy, Scot, and I have been meaning to get out and shoot with each other and finally were able to. The conditions were killer with just a slight overcast with occasional sun. We caught some rain driving through the bay area so on our way up we were a little worried but super stoked to see Santa Cruz was beautiful. Her and <a href="http://www.rosie.com/blog/">Rosie O'Donnell</a> were working with kids in the foster system and it totally blew me away. The show lasted about an hour and I was glued to the TV and ended up watching the whole thing. Much respect to both these ladies for opening my eyes to a world of kids that are all around me.<br /><br />After the show I told Val how much I wanted to work with foster kids and kept wondering how to get involved. Little did I know that God in His awesomeness would bring something our way about 2 days later. I get a call from my mom telling me a girl who works with her was wondering if Valerie and I would be interested in being counselors for a week with an organization known as <a href="http://www.rfkc.org/">Royal Family Kids Camp</a>. I am still in awe at how amazing God is at putting these opportunities in front of us sometimes. Nobody except Valerie knew I had even mentioned wanting to do this.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.rfkc.org/">Royal Family Kids Camp</a> is an organization that has camps nationally (and some overseas) that give abused and neglected children in the foster care system a week they will never forget. It really is all about the kids and I cannot even describe how excited I am to build relationships with these kids the week we have together. Unfortunately state law prohibits any contact with these kids after the camp. You can not bring a camera, have any pictures of the kids, exchange addresses, emails, etc. As you can imagine I was super bummed to find out I would not be able to bring my camera. What it made me realize is that I need to leave a lasting impression on these kids the one week we have together. Many of these kids have grown up with adults who simply do not care. Many of these kids have been neglected, sexually abused, told they are worthless and will never amount to anything. While I can't change what has happened in their past I hope God will provide me with the wisdom and strength to show these kids they are truly loved and can accomplish anything they set their minds to. While I am sure this will be a life changing experience for them, I know that this one, very short week will change me as a person forever.<br /><br />While I would love to go to Africa, South America, and other countries to help poverty-stricken children (it is a goal one day) - I have realized there are also kids who, for all I know, are down the street from me equally in need.<br /><br />We have taken the first day of training and are leaving in June for a week to be a light to these kids. Looking through the car section I came across a magazine I had never heard of or seen before. A quick glance through the pages and I was amazed, motivated, and inspired instantly.<br /><br />It's called " <a href="http://badcopnodonuts.com/about-heavy-hitters-magazine/">Heavy Hitters</a> "<br /><br />So - what is it about? The magazine is about every day people going against the masses and choosing to be entrepreneurs and start their own businesses. What? No guaranteed paycheck? No job security? That's right.<br /><br />As well, the magazine is based upon showcasing some of these guys amazing cars. If you know me the magazine was an instant favorite.<br /><br />Beyond the material possessions is where you really start to learn and understand the magazines true purpose: to motivate and inspire. These guys are every day people (one I read tonight was even homeless at one point in his life) starting businesses that blossom into super successful businesses which provide them financial freedom. They share how they started, what they do, and why it's so important to go full throttle for what ever it is you want in life. Be your own boss! You have dreams and aspirations - GO DO THEM. Don't let anyone tell you you can't achieve what you want to achieve in life. Erase negativity, be ethical, give to others, be true to you, and surround yourself with the right people. I truly believe unlimited success can happen to anyone who desires it bad enough. Don't talk, take action! The people who talk just keep talking until they decide to DO, and the ones who DO are the ones who SUCCEED. I am sure the road to success is not easy - you may stumble (others would call it failure), but with every stumble needs to be a learning experience and motivation to TRY AGAIN. I can only imagine it takes hard work and uncertain risks, but with hard work and risk comes great reward. It's old news and I am so late at blogging about it, I apologize. Time for a short version:<br /><br />I proposed the week before Christmas in San Francisco at the new <span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><a target="_blank" href="http://www.unionsquareicerink.com/">Union Square Ice Skating Rink</a></span><br /></span><br /><br />I swear, I was so beyond nervous. I think most guys can relate to the actual day of having to propose. If you would have asked me any day before 'The Big Day' I would have told you it will be a piece of cake. My nerves were not even getting to me because of having to ask her, but just me psyching myself out that somehow she already knew or would find out before I actually knelt down and popped the question. On top of that I had never been ice skating - talk about nerve-racking! Would I even be able to stand up or make it a foot away from the platform? Long, stressful nights thinking about all the "what if's". Out of everything, my greatest fear of all was opening the little box and seeing no ring inside. Let me just say that my greatest fear came true..<br /><br />Fourty-five minutes before we even hit the ice rink I was fumbling around with the box in my pocket and thinking of a million and one ways to lead into the big question. During that time is when I must have knocked the ring out of its position, leaving it sitting freely in the box.<br /><br />As soon as we got on to the ice I did a little small talk, knelt down, popped the question and opened the box -- no ring! I felt my heart skip a beat. Luckily Valerie saw it drop to the ice.<br /><br />That little hitch wasn't quite as I planned it, but still well worth all the planning and coordinating to get everyone and everything just right. It was amazing to have both of our families there in the city which we love.<br /><br />--<br /><br />Now that I've explained the engagement I can get to tonight. I've been meaning to but every time I get around to doing it I have something else that distracts me away.<br /><br />I look at magazines a lot as I've found that they are awesome places to look for photographers and inspirational ideas. Magazines such as <a href="http://www.style.com/vogue/">Vogue</a>, <a href="http://www.cosmopolitan.com/">Cosmopolitan</a>, <a href="http://www.instyle.com/instyle/">InStyle</a>, etc. I am sure you know the list.<br /><br />A couple weeks ago was no different -- sitting in my room looking through an <a href="http://www.instyle.com/instyle/">InStyle</a> magazine I found we had sitting around the house. Low and behold I find an amazing photographer you all need to check out. I absolutely was drawn to his images when I first saw them in the magazine. I quickly jotted down his name and went to his website...<br /><br />Simply said...WOW.<br /><br />I know you're wondering who he is! What a night - we started around 10pm and didn't get done until almost 1am in the morning! First, I think to people that are a part of 'the arts', being a perfectionist comes natural. We are never happy with our work, and if we are it's only for a short time. We always are striving to do better and make everything, well - PERFECT. The funny thing is is that making your work perfect NEVER comes, does it? In one sense being a perfectionist continually pushes you to do more, and produce better. Who wouldn't want to produce better work?<br /><br />The flip side to being a perfectionist is that it can severely limit you from where you want to go with your work. If you continually are doubting you can produce that quality, "perfect work", you may never take action! I think we get in a rut of being our own worse critic. And I would say 99% of the things we see wrong in our work no client would ever be able to pick out. <br /><br />I say just do it! Don't let being a perfectionist limit you to thinking you may never be good enough. A key inspiration and role-model to me, <a href="http://www.mikecolon.com/">Mike Colon</a>, says jump into whatever you want to do with both feet and THEN figure out how your going to back up that commitment. His ideas for films are super amazing and I have no doubt he will be putting movies out in theaters some day.<br /><br />Today I finally went out and got some photographs of him working his magic. I have actually been wanting to do this for a long time so it was great to get out and do it. The film is a sci-fi, dubbed "Vanished" and super unique. You know, that's what I love about his stuff - he can take an ordinary, every day type movie and then throw his own twist on it.<br /><br />I had an awesome time and it was great meeting everyone there. Have people who inspire you and surround yourself around those people. Don't limit yourself to just a 'on the surface' inspiration. For example - find individuals who inspire you not only in your business, school, hobbies, etc. but look deeper for those who also inspire you in your core beliefs and values. I can look at many photographers a day whose work may inspire me, but only a select few can inspire me in a deep and lasting way. Why is that some people can touch us in these certain ways? I think a lot has to do with who they are as a person. I may love a photographers work, but then see that their core values are not open to giving, sharing, and helping others. This suddenly, for whatever reason makes them an individual who is not able to offer me a deeper, more personal inspiration. Individuals are just drawn to people who give and inspire. But it shouldn't stop at just being inspired.<br /><br />Reach to inspire others. Provide people with deep, lasting inspiration. You honestly never know what you're going to get. Every time I am around my girlfriend's nieces I can't help but pull out my camera and start shooting. I can only imagine how I am going to be with my own kids some day!<br /><br />We were all together yesterday evening for a get together and, as usual, I decided to get out the camera and run around with them and get some shots.<br /><br />Here's Lexie, and at almost 3 she is getting to the point where every time my camera comes out it is time to run away and hide. She wasn't fast enough! I managed to get this shot of her sitting in the dirt in the backyard.<br /><br />At first glance I was bummed the shot didn't capture her whole body, but the more I looked at it the more I started to love it for that reason. Don't think your shots have to be 'compositionally correct' to make great photographers. I believe photography is in the eye of the beholder. There are always going to be people that love your photographs and others that will critique it until they're blue in the face. They are a series of photos that usually 'tell a story', hence the name, or are a series of photos similar to each other. The neat thing about them is that they don't necessarily have to be framed, but they can be. They can be backed by a number of different materials (foamboard, styrene, masonite) which makes them sturdy enough to just lean on a shelf.<br /><br />Anyways, enough talk. Let me show you mine I finished this evening. I sent it off to my lab and it should be to me within a day or so. But really, now I can sit down at the end of every single week and look back to see how little I knew before the week began. Photography to me is a never ending learning process. One week you think you've learned it all and you couldn't possibly improve anymore, just to find out that next big secret that pushes your photography even further. I absolutely love it.<br /><br />I first want to urge anybody who hasn't tried photography to really give it some thought. I never considered myself a person of 'the arts' going through school. As a matter of fact, art class bored the heck out of me. Me, drawing? Yeah. Right. It's a shame I had that attitude because now I see how much art and photography have in common. I honestly picked up a little, cheap Sony Digital camera one day and started taking pictures. They were horrible, but something inside me clicked: a talent God instilled in me that I never knew was there. Pretty cool. Long story short, here I am. So enough of this, just try it out and see where it takes you.<br /><br />For you out there that are already into photography. That's awesome. All I can tell you is read, read, and practice more. I have a problem with the latter. I tend to read a little too much and don't practice enough, which gets you no where! The internet really is a classroom filled with more information then you could ever imagine. It's amazing.
